August is National Brake Safety Awareness Month

Did you know that August has been designated as National Brake Safety Awareness Month? Courtesy Nissan of Tampa would like to remind you of the importance of making sure you have your brakes inspected on a regular basis. While, tire rotations and oil changes are commonly done, you should also make sure that you have your brakes inspected because that task is often overlooked.

You use your brakes all the time, so it’s normal for them to wear and yes, eventually need to be replaced. There are several factors that affect the way your brakes wear, including your driving habits, operating conditions, vehicle type, and the quality of the brake lining material.  Do not allow your brakes to get down to the point of “metal-on-metal” contact. It is potentially dangerous and will lead to a higher repair bill.

There are some common warning signs you should look for to find out when your brakes need to be inspected

  • Noise: screeching, grinding or clicking noises when applying the brakes.
  • Pulling: vehicle pulls to one side while braking.
  • Grabbing: brakes grab at the slightest touch to the pedal.
  • Vibration: brake pedal vibrates or pulses, even under normal braking conditions.
  • Low Pedal: brake pedal nearly touches the floor before engaging.
  • Hard Pedal: must apply extreme pressure to the pedal before brakes engage.
  • Light: brake light is illuminated on your vehicle’s dashboard.

The difficult thing about brake replacement is that there is no defined schedule telling you when it’s time to replace your brake pads. The rule of thumb is to have your brakes inspected every 6 months, or at the very least, every 12 months.

Always put your safety first, as you should never ignore routine brake inspections or repair. Make sure you schedule an appointment to have your brakes checked at Courtesy Nissan of Tampa today.
